The 2016 film Moonlight has already impressed many since premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, earning middling reviews for its portrayal of a young black man who struggles to work his way through life. Some have praised the lush visuals and highly charged emotions, while others have found the narrative to be too episodic and lacking in structure. Regardless, the film is one of the most exciting releases of the year, and one of the most delicate pieces of cinematic art showcased in recent years.
A Sensitive Story of Courage and Struggle
Moonlight tells the story of Chiron, a boy growing up in Miami, who struggles to make sense of his environment as he is wrangled between a world of drugs and delinquency, and one of love and courage. Working its way through three different versions of Chiron — child, adolescent and — the movie unfolds with a beautiful fluidity, and tells a contemporary story of a young black man in America. As complex as it is original, the film is surprisingly intimate and quiet as it captures the nuances of his struggle with his personal identity while having to confront the harsh realities of his environment.
Reinventing the Way We See Advertising
Billboard advertising has traditionally been used to sell products that are overly violent or loaded with half-truths. However, recent years have seen an ever-increasing shift towards creative forms of advertising seen on billboards. Companies such as IBM and Google have used their billboards to send sky-wrapping messages of peace and sustainability rather than focusing on the promotion of a particular product or service. This shift has seen companies create campaigns that are not only more aesthetically pleasing, but have also attempt to evoke a sense of emotion, something that is generally lacking in the advertising industry.
We have also seen an increase in the use of social messaging in billboard ads. Recent campaigns from companies such as Coca-Cola have focused not only on the promotion of their products, but have also attempted to send a message about tolerance and understanding. This shift not only helps make billboards more aesthetically pleasing, but also ensures that the content attached to them has a powerful social and moral message to impart.
Whether it be a movie like Moonlight that captures the honesty of a person’s story or challenging the norms of the advertising industry, creativity is the driving force of progress. It is through this creative drive that we can truly see the beauty in the world around us.
