The preservation of our global heritage is of utmost importance. We have a responsibility to protect the monuments, cultural artifacts, and sites that are beacons of our shared history. This is why it is so important that we help protect the largest open-air assemblage of Upper Paleolithic art in the world, located in the Cave of Foz Coa in Portugal.
A Call to Arms to Save the Largest Open-air Assemblage of Upper Paleolithic Art
In the limestone cliffs along Portugal’s border with Spain, the Cave of Foex Coa hides some of the earliest artistic expressions of the human species. Inside, ancient carvings and paintings date to 26,000 – 5,000 BCE, making them some of the oldest examples of Paleolithic art yet discovered. It is estimated that the cave contains over 8 thousand such figures, ranging from animals to abstract lines.
Unfortunately, this incredible repository of our shared human past is currently under significant threat from development and destruction. In order to save the cave, a consortium of European and global organizations have banded together to create a global‐ coalitions of experts to launch a dedicated “Call to Arms” which will raise awareness of the threat and the need to protect this ancient cultural haven.
The goal is to create an international agreement and set of protocols that would guarantee the long-term preservation of the Cave and the surrounding landscape. This agreement could be used to expand the global appreciation and knowledge of Paleolithic art, while also protecting this precious global heritage.
