Have you ever dreamed of touching a Van Gogh painting? Sure, you’re familiar with how each painting holds monumental historical and cultural value, but touching one? That would be a fairytale come true. Well, now you can and the means of 3D printing technology.
The Value of Van Gogh’s Artwork
The artwork of Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, Vincent van Gogh, is filled to the absolute brim with history, emotion, and passion. His love for the sublimity of nature and spiritually found in everyday life shows through his many paintings and drawings. His 1988 painting, Irises, sold for $53.9 million, making it one of the most expensive paintings ever sold. And, his popular painting titled The Starry Night was created during his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in 1889 and is considered to be “one of the most recognized images in the world”. These two incredible pieces of art, along with many others, showcase why van Gogh has become one of the most recognized post-impressionist painters of all time.
3D Printed Replicas of Van Gogh’s Artwork?
Due to the increasing cost of the originals, people often find themselves in a situation where they cannot admire the art up close. Just looking at it behind a thick museum glass, though interesting or appealing, will not capture the experience of seeing and potentially touching it. Now, with 3D printing technology, an individual can find themself in the unique position of being able to do exactly that. The process of 3D printing begins with scanning the artwork with a special kind of scanner. The scanner copies an exact replica of the original artwork, creating a computer model that is readable by the 3D printer. Then the printer begins creating a scaled-down replica of the painting layer by layer. During this process, it utilizes a 3D stylus and specially engineered architectural plastics called photopolymers. This plastic is hardened in the presence of light and digital interaction, recreating the colors used in the painting and flawlessly replicating the texture as well.
As exciting as this process may sound, it is extremely expensive and a bit too large to recreate on a single printer. To print one luxury-sized painting, you often need two or more different 3D printers. All of the parts must be perfectly fitted together in order to create a life-sized replica of the painting.
This kind of technology could potentially open up a world of possibilities. With it, you could recreate countless amounts of paintings and take them with you wherever you go. Even better, it will give people that once in a lifetime chance to experience these masterpieces up close without causing any damage or deterioration to the originals. It brings us one step closer to being able to replicate the great works of art that have shaped our culture and history.
