The world of technology has come a long way in the last few decades. For many people, the sight of networking systems and data packets can seem almost magical. Yet with a little understanding and exploration, the inner workings of data systems around the world can be discovered.
One of the key systems at the heart of this technological web is the OSI Model. This model provides a framework for communication between two or more computers by outlining seven distinct layers that each provide their own unique function. The data travels along the layers beginning from the physical layer to the presentation layer, allowing for speedy and efficient communication.

The OSI Model describes services at each of the layers that can be utilized to communicate across the network and is made up of the physical, data link, network, transport, and session layers. As well as being responsible for data transmission, the model sets out the means for a system of interoperability between computers. This allows for the innovative use of technology when data and information needs to be transferred between devices on a global scale.
The power of remote transmission of data is not to be underestimated. Such technology is not only useful for remote internet communication, but also for more local networks. This is where radar systems can come in.

Radar systems are designed to interact with other similar systems on the same network, making them particularly useful for ships navigating in close proximity. Sightings can be captured at a moment’s notice and communicated quickly and efficiently across the network of radar systems. Such comprehensive and accurate data transmission is sufficient to give a comprehensive view of the current sea conditions.
The power of the technology underlying the data transmission of Internet, now replaced by more modern transmission frameworks such as 5G, is not to be underestimated. From the ground up, the processes of communication between systems form an integral part in the machinery of global communication networks. As technology continues to progress, the reliance on these networks and the underlying principles of the OSI Model become increasingly apparent.
