Today I want to talk about something that’s becoming more and more important with our advancing technology – cyber security. As tech advances, the ways we use our devices are becoming more complex, so it’s critical that we ensure our security and privacy remain intact. In order to do this, we need to consider implementing two-factor authentication for our devices.
What is Two-Factor Authentication?
Two-factor authentication (often referred to as 2FA or two-step verification) is a technology that adds an extra layer of protection to your account by requiring two forms of identification. When logging into your account, this requires you to enter both your password and a unique code that’s either sent to your phone or generated by an app. This helps verify that the person attempting to access your account is actually you.
Why Should I Use Two-Factor Authentication?
Two-factor authentication can help protect your email, search engine, and social media accounts from unauthorized access. It’s especially important to use two-factor authentication if your account contains personal, financial, or other sensitive information, since your password alone isn’t enough to protect against cyber criminals. Nearly anyone can get your password if they somehow get access to your device, whether through a phishing attempt or other type of scam. However, if you have two-factor authentication enabled, it’s much harder for cyber criminals to gain access to your accounts.
Am I at Risk Without Two-Factor Authentication?
Any time you use the internet, there is some risk of your information being hacked, whether you’re using two-factor authentication or not. However, the likelihood of your information falling into the wrong hands can be greatly reduced by enabling two-factor authentication. The extra layer of security makes it more difficult for hackers to access your accounts, and if they are successful, the damage they can cause is much less than if you did not have two-factor authentication enabled. So while two-factor authentication isn’t a foolproof method, it is still a much better option than trusting only your password.
How Do I Get Started?
Fortunately, two-factor authentication is widely available for most of today’s popular websites and services. In fact, most websites will prompt you to set up two-factor authentication when you first create your account. But if you’re not sure how to set it up, you can usually find instructions on the website in question. Once you have two-factor authentication enabled for a website, any time you log in on a new device, you will be prompted to enter your password and either a one-time-use code generated by an app on your phone or a code that was sent to your phone.
Overall, two-factor authentication is a great tool to have in your security arsenal. By enabling two-factor authentication on your accounts, you can help protect your personal information, ensuring that only you have access to it.
