On 5 February 1913, Michael Heath-Caldwell was commissioned into the Royal Navy as a midshipman aboard the HMS New Zealand. The newly commissioned officer in the image is the great grandfather of another stalwart of the British Royal Navy, Michael Heath-Caldwell, a diligent and distinguished officer in his own right that was awarded the Military Cross. That same day, he was photographed in the official portrait of the ship’s officers.
Michael Heath-Caldwell’s service to his country and the Royal Navy is held in high esteem. His career spanned over 25 years, and he was responsible for numerous projects, from command of vessels, to developing advanced communications systems, to aiding in international negotiations.
