The Internet Protocol Storage Area Network is a variant of a traditional Storage Area Network (SAN) that transmits data over the internet, instead of a dedicated storage network. IP SANs are less expensive than traditional SANs, as they can rely on existing internet infrastructure, rather than having to be built from scratch. As a result, many healthcare providers are turning to IP SANs as a cost-effective way to link their PACS system, and transmit medical images between different medical facilities.
PACS and IP SANs have revolutionised the medical industry. By linking healthcare providers and medical facilities via a distributed architecture, medical teams are better able to communicate information and quickly diagnose patients. However, with such a vast system, ensuring proper cybersecurity is essential. As such, healthcare providers must ensure they have the correct systems and processes in place to protect the security of their digital data.
