Now more and more businesses are searching for ways to become more sustainable – and food production is one industry that could make a huge difference. Egg-producing companies came up with an innovative idea – free-range egg farming.
Cage-Free Eggs
Cage-free eggs, also known as aviary eggs, are produced in an environment that doesn’t involve cages. Hens are able to move freely throughout a large, open barn or area, and can have scratching and nesting boxes. Though many people might assume that cage-free hens roam free in an outdoor area, this isn’t always the case. Many free-range barns are kept indoors, although the hens are usually given access to outdoor areas. The idea is that this allows the hens to more closely mimic their natural behaviors.
Cage-free eggs are thought to be more ethical because hens are given more freedom and space than those raised in battery cages – the standard in egg production. Battery cages are small, confined cages that house multiple hens. Though there is limited research on the welfare of cage-free hens, compared to hens in battery cages, the consensus so far is that cage-free hens may have improved welfare.
Sustainability
So, are cage-free eggs more sustainable than convential egg production? The answer to this question is a bit more complicated. Research suggests that cage-free systems have a lower carbon footprint than battery cages, which is a major plus. Additionally, cage-free systems are more efficient in terms of feed conversion, due to the ability of hens to move freely.
However, cage-free operations require more energy and land, both of which could potentially lead to more greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, in order to keep hens safe from predators and disease, many cage-free systems are kept indoors. Though larger in size, these indoor barns don’t allow enough outdoor area for hens to perform natural behaviors like dust bathing, which could impact their welfare.
At this point, it is not clear which egg production system is more sustainable. While cage-free systems may be more ethical, they may not be more environmentally friendly. Companies that are serious about sustainability and animal welfare should try to use a combination of both indoor and outdoor housing systems.
