As technology advances so does the technology we use for our data centers. We tend to think of today’s data centers as massive rooms full of servers, cables, and wires, but the data center of the future might look much different. Through the growing trend of virtualization, cloud computing, and edge computing, data centers may not look quite the same in the future.
Newer and More Efficient Solutions
From a structural standpoint, one possible future of the data center involves running operations from a single, massive facility to multiple smaller facilities. This could help to reduce the energy needed to cool and power the facility, leading to reduced energy costs. Additionally, new technologies can help reduce power usage for the entire facility, making it more efficient.
For instance, liquid cooling is becoming more popular for data centers. This involves circulating coolant through the data center’s hardware racks to help dissipate heat. With liquid cooling, data centers can handle more workloads and higher temperatures within their hardware. This can potentially reduce the number of cooling units needed and the amount of electrical power consumed.
Integrating IT and Physical Infrastructure
In the future, data center infrastructure may be integrated into the IT environment. This could open the door to enhanced automation and intelligent operations, with data-driven insights driving decisions regarding what system components should be powered on, or when maintenance should be performed. The environment could also be designed to assess its own needs and automatically make adjustments to ensure optimal system performance and resiliency.
An Environmentally Conscious Design
The need for environmentally friendly data centers will also continue to rise. This includes practices such as repurposing water for cooling and replacing traditional diesel-fired backup generators with fuel cells or renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar. In fact, research from Microsoft finds that its data centers worldwide use water-based cooling systems to improve energy efficiency.
One example of an environmentally conscious data center is the Assunpink Creek Daylighting project in New Jersey. The project restores the creek to its natural state, which includes diverting a portion of the wastewater for use in the data center. This helps to decrease water demand on the local infrastructure and improves the environment.
The Future of the Data Center
As technology trends toward virtualization and cloud computing, the potential for data centers is limitless. Through new automation techniques, efficient liquid cooling, and environmentally conscious designs, the data center of the future will be more efficient and reliable than ever before.
