At Pilgrim Library at Defiance University, one of the first things we recommend students do when researching for a paper, or any academic project for that matter, is to identify the type of sources you will be using. We understand that it can be a challenge to differentiate between primary, secondary, and tertiary sources of information, and we’ve created a few to help guide you through this process.
Secondary Sources
Secondary sources use first-hand information and provide an analysis by summarizing the primary sources. Secondary sources provide the “big picture” of an issue by widely accessing the material. Not only do they provide the “big picture” of the source material, but they also provide an opinion by someone with authority; this may include readings, reviews, surveys, and more. Examples of secondary sources include: encyclopedias, textbooks, and magazine articles.
Types of Sources
Primary sources provide first-hand accounts of the research topic, and in some cases can provide the only available information on the subject. These sources provide a lens into the research topic, and may include interviews, research studies, surveys, novels, photographs, and more. Primary sources are often firsthand information, produced by the originator or participant of an event or phenomenon in the form of audiovisual documents, photographs, leaflets, texts and documents. Examples of primary sources include: diaries, letters, photographs, census data, interviews, art works, memoirs and manuscripts.
At Pilgrim Library, we hope that this tutorial will help make researching a bit easier! Whether it be primary, secondary or tertiary sources, we wish you luck throughout your research journey. Just be sure to cross-reference any information you find; reliable sources should align with one another. Although it may seem intimidating, researching is a great way to learn something new, and can help provide you with an opportunity to think outside the box. With the help of these different sources of material, you’ll be on your way to success.
