Today we will be discussing two of the most fundamental types of network topologies, star bus topology and network topology. By understanding the differences between them and more importantly their applications, administrators are able to effectively network their systems.
Network topology
Network topology describes the layout of an interconnected system, such as a local area network (LAN). This layout is similar to a city map – it shows how different elements of the system are logically related.
In a LAN, for example, the network topology describes the relationship between the various computers, cables and other components that work together to form the overall LAN. The network topology dictates how the components are connected and how the data passes from one component to another.
Typical network types include bus networks, tree networks, star networks, mesh networks and ring networks. Depending on the network’s purpose and requirements, the administrator must choose the most suitable topology.
Star bus topology
Star bus topology is composed of two individual networks – the bus and the star. The bus network consists of one large loop of cables with several nodes (computers, printers etc.) connected at specific points along the loop. This is usually the most popular structure for computer networks and is extremely easy to maintain.
The star network, on the other hand, is composed of a series of small star-shaped structures, each with nodes connected to a central hub. Due to its smaller size, the star network is perfect for small office networks or home networks.
Star bus topology is a great option for many networking applications, because it provides the flexibility of combining two different network architectures in one setup. This makes it ideal for mid-sized networks, such as classrooms and businesses, where there is a need for two separate networks with different characteristics.
One of the main advantages of star bus topology is its scalability – it can easily be expanded for larger networks. Additionally, it can easily be reconfigured to change the physical layout of the network, which makes it a great choice for businesses that need to frequently adapt their network to changing requirements.
All in all, star bus topology is a great choice for mid-sized networks, because its combination of star and bus networks makes it flexible, scalable and easy to manage. Administrators should be aware of the differences between the two networks and choose the one that best suits their needs.
